Large drop in mortality rate for children under 5, worldwide

     The number of children under five who die each year has plummeted from 12 million in 1990, to 7.6 million last year, the UN says. (BBC)

    I have personally read a few studies that link economic success to childhood mortality rates (google link bomb) as well as watched a few TED Talks videos on the subject. There is a growing amount of evidence that shows a direct link between economic success of a region and childhood mortality rates, as well as life expectancy rates. Also, as an additional bonus, there seems to be a correlation between economic success and amount of children born per woman. The reasoning behind this is in more impoverished regions, women have multiple children since the chances of childhood death is significantly higher than more economically sound areas. (due to better access to food, better health care, cleaner water and environment etc) Interesting things to consider.

Police refuse eviction of 103 year old woman, Atlanta, GA

     Recently, there was a story of a bank which was trying to evict an 103 year old woman and her 83 year old daughter. Things did not go as planned when the police refused the eviction order and left. The bank has since recanted and will work with the elder women. (local AJC.com Atlanta, GA article)

   Community activists alerted local media to reports that the 103 year old elderly lady, Vinia Hall, had lost a long legal battle with the bank and now faces foreclosure and eviction. The eviction process would have left the 103 year old woman on the streets along with her 83 year old daughter.

     “We will work out a resolution to keep them in the home,” Thomas Kelly, a spokesman for the bank, said in an emailed statement.
     "That's a blessing. God says he don't fawn over what you can't take... I never believe I was gone," Hall said to the local media.

     Tuesday, Fulton County Sherrif's Department (contact link) was called to Mrs. Hall's residence to server an eviction notice posted by Deutsche Bank (contact link) which is owned by JPMorgan and Chase Co. (contact link)

     Upon arrival, the sherrif's department decided that they will not carry out the eviction notice and left. The 83 year old daughter went to the hospital for stress induced illness, but Vinia Hall stayed in her location. Upon further outcry and numerous local complaints, the bank has decided to recant the eviction notice and review the case further.

     "When I am gone, ya'll can come out here and do anything you wanna do" said Mrs. Hall to inteviewers.

     I encourage anyone reading this to contact the Fulton County Police and Sherrif's department, and let them know how you feel about their refusal to serve the eviction notice, and I encourage anyone reading this to contact Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan and Chase and let them know how you feel about the eviction notice given to an almost 104 year old woman, as well as overcharging over 4000 military families for their morgages, and improperly foreclosing on 14 of them, admittedly breaking federal law.
